How Often Should You Market to Your Audience?

The Balancing Act of Visibility and Engagement

How often should I market to my audience

Marketing is a game of attention. We’re all vying for the same thing: a slice of the consumer’s focus in a world where they are bombarded with 6,000 to 10,000 ads per day (yes, you read that right). The challenge isn’t just reaching your audience—it’s making them remember you.

So, how often should you market to your audience? This question comes up a lot, and while there are no one-size-fits-all answers, we can certainly offer some solid guidelines. The short answer: more often than you think, but with a strategic balance.

Let’s break it down.

Why Frequency Matters in Marketing

The old rule of seven states that a prospect needs to see a brand at least seven times before it sticks in their memory. In reality, that number is probably much higher today. People are multitasking across devices, scrolling through endless content, and tuning out the noise.

If you’re not consistently marketing, you’re simply not in the game.

And let’s be clear—marketing isn’t just about pushing ads. It’s about being present across the platforms where your audience is engaging, providing value, and staying top-of-mind when they need you.

For example, if you’re an HVAC company, you don’t just want to show up when someone’s furnace breaks. You want them to already know and trust you from previous interactions so that when an emergency hits, they call you first instead of your competitor.

Marketing Frequency by Channel

Different marketing channels require different levels of frequency. The word “require” here is a strong word. Remember, no matter what number you see below, it’s a full stop if you are not getting engagement with said marketing material you are putting out.  Hitting the “quantity” doesn’t mean you’ll hit the “quality”.  But if you put enough out there you will start to discover what works and what doesn’t.  We’ve seen the opposite, where you are wanting to put something out and “make it go viral”.

Audiences are finicky and you don’t just put something out and it goes viral, what you do is stay consistent.

Here’s a breakdown of some guidelines on how often you should engage in each:

1. Social Media Posting

  • Guideline: At least once a day per platform, but quality over quantity.
  • Reality Check: Posting just to post isn’t the goal. If you’re forcing content that gets no engagement, it’s time to scale back to what is working.
  • Pro Tip: Engagement is more important than frequency. If you’re spread too thin across multiple platforms and can’t engage, focus on fewer channels and do them well.

2. Email Marketing

  • Guideline: 1-4 times per month.
  • Reality Check: If your email open rates and click-through rates are dropping, you may be overdoing it (or sending the wrong content). On the flip side, if people are engaging, you might be able to send more.
  • Pro Tip: Automated email sequences (welcome emails, abandoned cart reminders, etc.) should work alongside regular newsletters to keep communication flowing without overwhelming subscribers.

3. Paid Advertising (Social & Google Ads)

  • Guideline: Ensure people see your ads at least 3-5 times before expecting engagement. Notice we didn’t say conversions, that’s down the funnel.
  • Reality Check: One of the biggest mistakes we see? Companies trying to target too broad of an audience with a small budget. This results in low ad frequency, meaning people only see the ad once or twice, and it fails to make an impact.
  • Pro Tip: Narrow your audience to ensure the right people see your message multiple times rather than spreading your budget too thin.

4. Content Marketing (Blogs & Articles)

  • Guideline: 1-4 blog posts per month.Marketing Frequency
  • Reality Check: More content isn’t necessarily better. Thanks to AI, there’s a flood of low-quality content out there. Your focus should be on quality, originality, and consistency.
  • Pro Tip: If you can only produce one great blog per month, that’s better than four mediocre ones. Prioritize long-form, value-driven content that answers your audience’s biggest questions.

5. Video & Podcasting

  • Guideline: At least once a week, but consistency is key.
  • Reality Check: People subscribe to content they expect to see regularly. If you’re sporadic with posting, your audience will lose interest.
  • Pro Tip: If you’re just starting, set a sustainable goal. Even one video or podcast per month is fine—just make sure it’s high quality and valuable.

Finding the Right Balance: Reach vs. Frequency

Marketing is all about balance—you need to reach enough people enough times to be effective, but not so much that they tune you out. This is often called marketing fatigue.  They are seeing the same thing over and over, and you need to reset the creative in what you are doing. This is where sometimes the branding experts who want that consistency in look and feel go nuts over throwing out a curve ball.  But curve balls work.

If your audience sees your message only once, it won’t stick.

If they see it too much without variety, they’ll get annoyed.

The key is multi-channel marketing, meaning you need to:

✔ Show up across multiple platforms.
✔ Ensure your audience sees your message several times.
✔ Avoid overexposure by refreshing your creative and targeting.

For example, if you’re running ads, layering in retargeting ads (ads shown specifically to people who have already interacted with your brand) can help reinforce your message without overwhelming new prospects.

Marketing Is a Long Game—Play It Right

Marketing success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through consistent, strategic, and data-driven efforts over time.

The best marketers:

  • Stay consistent, even when results aren’t immediate.
  • Test different frequencies and adjust based on data.
  • Use a mix of brand-building and direct response marketing to stay relevant while driving action.

If you take anything away from this, let it be this: Marketing is not a one-time thing. If you’re not continuously in front of your audience, someone else will be.

So, how often should you market? As often as you can while keeping your quality high and your audience engaged.
